Herriot Wines, Manjipmup (Biodynamic Growing  No. 6 June 2006)

John and Yvonne Herriot bought their 60-hectare (150 acre) property near Manjimup, in the southwest of Western Australia, in 1996. They moved to Manjimup in 1999, and finally onto the property in 2001.

Manjimup is in the southwest forest region, the land of giant Karri, Jarrah and Red Gum (Marri) trees, and a relatively high rainfall area (1100-1400 mm annually), the rain mostly coming in winter. The suffix “up” is a Nyoongar (aboriginal) word for water, and is common throughout the southwest – Nannup, Kojonup, Balingup, Kulikup, etc. The Herriots have 10 hectares under grapes (they plan to eventually plant 12 hectares) 37 hectares of pasture and 13 hectares of native forest, which they will never clear, with Karri, Jarrah and Red Gum predominating.
